FAQ
- Is my wood floor refinishable?
As long as your wood floor is at least 1/2" thick with at least a 3/16" thick wear layer. Any wood floor with less would be at risk of being sanded beyond the wear layer exposing the tongue and groove.
- Is there a hard surface floor that will not scratch?
All hard surfaces have the possibility of being scratched, including granite and steel. The trick is finding right flooring type and finish that fits your lifestyle. A floor with texture and low sheen level will best hide scratches, dust, pet hair and dried water spots. Oil-based and water-based polyurethanes offer finishes with little to no shine and most of the natural oil finishes only offer mat or satin sheen levels.
- How do I clean my new flooring?
For hardwood flooring that is finished with a polyurethane finish, it is recommended that you use a mild degreaser that doesn't leave a residue that will build up over time. Example Woodwise No-wax Hardwood Floor Cleaner. Use a vacuum or dust mop and damp rag or paper towel for every day removal of dust, food and liquid spills.
Hardwood flooring finished with natural oil finishes should be cleaned with the maintenance products made by the manufacturer of the finish. If you're unsure of the manufacturer of the oil finish there are some maintenance products that are designed to be used on most oiled, waxed and soaped wood floors. Example WOCA maintenance products. The same practice of using a dust mop and a damp rag with polyurethane for everyday cleaning applies to natural oil finishes.
With sheet vinyl, luxury vinyl plank and tile, you should use a similar product to which you would use on a polyurethane finished hardwood floor. A mild degreaser that doesn't leave any build up. Vacuum or dust mop and damp rag or paper towel for everyday clean-up.
For carpet, you should vacuum it at least once a week to avoid dirt and dust from matting into it and have it professionally cleaned annually.
